Program Stage

Fingering Method

Method 1. Fingering Method

In this term, the child is taught to count from 0 – 99 using his fingers. On the right hand, each finger represents one count and on the left hand, each finger represents a group of ten counts. The child is then trained to do addition and subtraction using the theory of the fingering method. Once these calculations are learned by the child, only then, will he be introduced to the abacus.

Abacus Training

Method 2. The Abacus

The use of the abacus is the higher term in learning arithmetic. In this term, the child is taught to transfer the theory of the fingering method to the abacus. Only the right hand is used to handle the abacus. The thumb and the index finger are used at the bottom section of the abacus that consists of four beads on each column and only the index finger is used at the top section of the abacus that has single beads on each column. By using the abacus, the child can now calculate addition and subtraction from 1 to 1000.

Mental Arithmetic

Method 3. Mental Arithmetic

Here the child is taught to visualize the abacus in his mind. He is then trained to do the calculations mentally with and without using the abacus. In this term, the multiplication method of calculation is introduced to the child.

Visualization

Method 4-8. Visualization of Other Functions

The visualization of the functions of (+ – x ÷) method is established. In these terms, the lessons are concentrated on larger and more complex numbers. The learner is required to complete it fast and accurately.
