Get ready for the international competition 2022!

Our International Competition returns, and it will be held in Mexico: a country enlightened with many cultural things to offer. Get ready for a great gastronomic experience in the heart of the Mayan culture, with an ancient history full of magic and mysticism.

We are preparing for an unforgettable celebration, our ALOHA Mental Arithmetic International Competition Merida, Yucatan, Mexico 2022. You can’t miss this! Registration will be open until 29th August, 2022.

*Nearest Airport with best International connections: Cancun.

It’s easy to register for the event. You just have to follow some simple steps:

1. Invite your parents to our Competition.

2. Fill the Registration Form in your ALOHA Centre or send it to info@alohama.com.

3. Pay the fee in advance to confirm the registration.

4. Encourage other ALOHA students to attend.

5. Practice with enthusiasm every day. Remember you will be testing your skills with students from different countries.

6. Pack your bags and enjoy Mexico!

Merida:

Merida is distinguished for being a peaceful city with charming, friendly and hospitable people. Named “American Capital of Culture” for the second time, it is also cataloged as the safest city in Mexico and the second safest city in all America.

This city has the most incredible and unforgettable places to discover!

Historic Center: is the second largest in Mexico, its streets are ideal for a walking experience, with historical buildings, museums, and many cultural activities, as well as the tasting of typical dishes of the region in the various restaurants.

Paseo Montejo: this area is characterized by the large number of restaurants, coffee shops and small shopping centers in a design inspired by the French boulevards especially the Champs Elysées in Paris.

Mayan Museum: The museum exhibits a magnificent collection of more than 1,160 pieces that allows you to enjoy, among other examples, textiles, religious objects, and various items that reflect the current daily life of the Mayans.

Archeological sites near Merida:

Chichén Itzá (1 hour and a half from Merida): this is one of the most important and most visited archeological places on the planet. In 2007, the Temple of Kukulcán was declared as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Uxmal (1 hour from Mérida): archeological placed declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. It’s made up of fifteen groups of buildings built around courtyards on a north-south axis.

“Cenotes” and other attractions near Merida:

*Cenotes are huge underground caves of crystal-clear water in the middle of the jungle, where you can swim, dive, and live an unforgettable adventure.

Ecological Reserve “El Corchito” (40 minutes from Merida): on the way to the cenote, you can see raccoons and a wide variety of vegetation.

Progreso (40 minutes from Merida): Progreso is the entry see point to Yucatan, but it is also projected as a privileged place to have fun with the most popular water sports: kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, etc.

Pink Lagoon (1 hour from Merida): a lagoon that surprises everyone who sees it because it has a peculiarity: it is pink! A complex natural phenomenon is generated that is produced by microorganisms called halo bacteria.  Important: the lagoon water is highly concentrated in salt and it is not recommended that you swim in it.

Celestun Beach – Flamingos’ beach (1 hour from Merida): a small fishing village on the Gulf Coast of Mexico. Surrounding the town is the Celestun Biosphere Reserve, unique for the flocks of flamingos that migrate to the mangroves in the winter.

Other places near Merida:

Cancun (3 hours and a half from Merida): its scenic beauty framed by white sand beaches and turquoise sea; the extension and biodiversity of its reefs, islands, lagoons, cenotes and jungle; the ancestral wealth of the Mayan culture; excellent air and land connectivity; and its first-class hotel infrastructure have positioned Cancun, Quintana Roo, as the most recognized Mexican tourist destination on a global scale and as a leading city in Latin America.

Gastronomy:

The local gastronomy stands out for its taste and tradition. You can find all sorts of restaurants, from traditional to high cuisine, where they use ancient Mayan techniques, endemic ingredients and a unique technique for baking and cooking with a system of burial of clay pots with dry wood that provides unique flavors.

Panuchos: a fried tortilla stuffed with beans and then topped with shredded chicken, cabbage, chopped red onion, avocado, and pickled jalapeños. Such a tasty combination!

Cochinita Pibil: a true mingling of Maya influence with some European flavors, this iconic Yucatec dish combines the indigenous staples of pork meat and annatto seed with the citrus flavors of oranges from Spain. The pork is marinated in citrus juices and seasoned with achiote paste from the annatto seed and wrapped in a banana leaf. The dish is traditionally slow cooked in a fire pit in the ground, hence its name, which means little, buried pig.

Salbutes: a fried tortilla topped with shredded chicken, cabbage, chopped red onion, avocado, and pickled jalapeños.

Papadzules: combining two ingredients that are common in Yucatec cuisine: hard boiled eggs and pumpkin seeds, Papadzules are tortillas dipped in pumpkin seed sauce, stuffed with hard boiled eggs and topped with a tomato and chili salsa. It’s an unusual combination of flavors but it is a real taste sensation.
